On November 10, 2009 the CTBC had a very successful Annual General Meeting (AGM) that was held in the Main Conference Room of the Ontario International Trade Center at 250 Yonge Street (Toronto) from 8:30 to 12:30 in the afternoon. The AGM was attended by over 40 participants including CTBC Board of Directors, Members, Partners, and those interested in Canada-Turkish business relations as a whole. The first hour consisted of a Networking breakfast where all participants had a chance to mingle, meet one another, and get acquainted on a personal level.
The Working Meeting began at 9:30 with a welcoming address by the Council`s Chairman, Mr. Ron Denom, who discussed Council Business of 2009, including the appointment to the Board of two new Directors for the CTBC; Mr. Loc Pham, Trade Commissioner, Europe & Central Asia Commercial Relations, DFAIT & Mr. Burak Aktas, Regional Manager, Eastern Mediterranean & the Baltic States, International Business Development, EDC.
We would also like to thank Mr. David Clendenning and Mr. Lorne Cutler two directors who have stepped down from our Board this year for their great contribution to the Council where they will always be remembered. Mr. Clendenning has taken on a new assignment at DFAIT as a Trade Commissioner, South, Southeast Asia and Oceania Commercial Relations and Mr. Lorne Cutler who is no longer with EDC and is now acting as an independent financial consultant, has recently completed a financial review of the Landowns Live Public Private partnership and is currently writing a personal finance self-help book. We wish them both successes in their new ventures.

Get to know our New Directors:
Burak Aktas
Burak Aktas joined Export Development Canada (EDC) in May 2001 as a Financial Services Manager on the Financial Institutions Team (FIT). He was responsible for the portfolio of the RBC, BMO, SocGen, ICICI, State Bank of India, and National City Bank within FIT. Prior to joining FIT, he completed his MBA graduation project “FDI in Turkey” with EDC’s International Markets Team.
As Regional Manager, Southeast Europe & the Baltic States, Mr. Aktas is responsible for business development within EDC, promoting Canadian exports and building relations between Canada and the following countries: Albania, Bosnia Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Macedonia, Montenegro, Romania, Serbia, Slovenia and Turkey.
Previously, Mr. Aktas worked at the Sabanci Group in Turkey as an Export Manager, responsible for Southeast Europe, Israel and Egypt. He also worked at the World Learning in Washington, DC, as an Exchange Program Intern in the Financial Reporting Department and at PwC as an Auditor (specialized in oil and gas audit). Mr. Aktas obtained an MBA (International Business) from the University of Ottawa and an Economics degree from the University of Istanbul.

Loc Pham
Loc Pham joined the Department of Foreign Affairs in March 2008 as a Trade officer. Following his first successful assignment in the Pacific Gateway Marketing Group – where he organised commercial missions to the US, Japan, Korea, and Taiwan– he is now the desk officer responsible for commercial relations with Turkey, the Caucasus, and Turkmenistan. Loc holds a Bachelor of Applied Science in Computer Engineering from the University of Ottawa and an MBA in International Business from McGill University. He also studied at the National University of Singapore and the Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto. Loc has had a varied career including working as a computer engineer at Nortel and Alcatel during the tech boom (and crash) and more recently, as director of operations at a Toronto-based online wine retailer. He is currently a part-time teaching assistant at York University in the course “Business in the Canadian Context”, which examines the interaction between business and government. He was born in Vietnam, and grew up in France and Quebec. An avid runner, he has completed 11 marathons, including New York’s, Chicago’s, and Washington’s. | |
